On Monday the virtual crime book club met to discuss Silenced by Sólveig Pálsdóttir and translated by Quentin Bates. We were lucky enough to have both Sólveig and Quentin present for a Q&A at the start which was incredibly interesting. You can watch the meeting on the video below. Be aware spoilers are contained.
For August, and as it’s summer in the northern hemisphere, we are reading a book with a holiday destination.
The next meeting is Monday 7th August at 8pm BST. If you are not yet a member you can find details on this page HERE.
Read the blurbs from the books below and make your choice, leaving your vote in the comments section by the end of Saturday 15th July. (I’m late putting this post up this week.)
The Retreat by Sarah Pearse
Most are here to recharge and refresh. But someone’s here for revenge. . .
An eco-wellness retreat has opened on an island off the English coast, promising rest and relaxation—but the island itself, known locally as Reaper’s Rock, has a dark past. Once the playground of a serial killer, it’s rumored to be cursed.
Detective Elin Warner is called to the retreat when a young woman’s body is found on the rocks below the yoga pavilion in what seems to be a tragic fall. But the victim wasn’t a guest—she wasn’t meant to be on the island at all.
When a guest drowns in a diving incident the following day, Elin starts to suspect that there’s nothing accidental about these deaths. But why would someone target the guests, and who else is in danger?
Elin must find the killer—before the island’s history starts to repeat itself . . .
That Night by Gillian McAllister
What would you do to protect your family?
ANYTHING.
That night everything changed.
The night Frannie commited a murder, but she didn’t mean to…
That night we helped her bury the body, what else could we do?
One hot summers night in Italy, Joe and Cathy Plant receive a phone call that will change their lives forever.
Their sister Frannie has killed a man, and she needs their help.
They were always close, some might say too close, siblings who worked together, lived next door to each other
And now they’ve buried a body together…
But when they return to England, Frannie, Joe and Cathy become tangled in lies in they’ve been telling,
to the police, to their friends, to each other…
But if you can’t trust your family, who can you trust?
The Wedding Party by Tammy Cohen
Till death do us part . . .
Lucy has dreamt of her wedding day for as long as she can remember.
And now the day is almost here. Her nearest and dearest are gathered on an idyllic Greek island and she just knows it’s going to be perfect. It has to be.
But even the best-laid plans can go horribly wrong. Why are her parents behaving so strangely? Why won’t the rather odd lady from the airport stop hanging around? Who is the silent stranger her sister brought as a plus-1?
And then they find the body.
It’s going to be a day to remember.

The Perfect Holiday by T. J. Emerson
Would you kill to be here?
Olivia and Julian are enjoying lazy days in their Spanish villa, a well deserved break from their busy lives. Especially for Julian, who after a lifetime as a carer was thrust into the public eye following the tragic murder of his first wife.
The languid heat and peace of the villa is broken only by clifftop walks, sun drenched lunches and cooling swims. Until a chance encounter with Gabriel – an attractive man, many years their junior – changes everything.
Soon their idyllic break turns into a dangerous, high-stakes game of cat-and-mouse. Will any of them get out alive?
You’re Invited by Amanda Jayatissa
What could be worse than your ex-boyfriend marrying your childhood best friend? Getting accused of her murder…
From the author of My Sweet Girl comes a dangerously addictive new thriller about a lavish Sri Lankan wedding celebration that not everyone will survive.
When Amaya is invited to Kaavi’s over-the-top wedding in Sri Lanka, she is surprised and a little hurt to hear from her former best friend after so many years of radio silence. But when Amaya learns that the groom is her very own ex-boyfriend, she is consumed by a single thought: She must stop the wedding from happening, no matter the cost.
But as the weeklong wedding celebrations begin and rumors about Amaya’s past begin to swirl, she can’t help but feel like she also has a target on her back. When Kaavi goes missing and is presumed dead, all evidence points to Amaya.
However, nothing is as it seems as Jayatissa expertly unravels that each wedding guest has their own dark secret and agenda, and Amaya may not be the only one with a plan to keep the bride from getting her happily ever after…
The Retreat.
Thanks, as ever, for managing this, Rebecca! My vote is for The Retreat, but they’re all deliciously holiday-ish.
I vote for The Retreat but also You’re Invited sounds interesting, set in Sri Lanka.
