Today I have Lorraine from the Book Review Cafe on the blog to talk about her 3 books. I’m thrilled to have her discussing her books here as I love her blog.
Lorraine is a book blogger and her book blog is the Book Review Café. She started her blog over two years ago. The blog came about after she had an accident at work and was off sick for an extended period of time. She got bored and as she always shared her reviews to Amazon, she thought why not set up a blog, never in a million years did she expect her blog to come to much, but it has and she’s so proud of her little space on the internet. She works full-time so her life is pretty hectic, but she always finds time to read and review books, although she does get frustrated that she is unable to read as much as she would like. Her dream job would be reading and reviewing books from home with a cup of coffee in her hand (not sure if such a job exists, but she did say dream job!)
1. What’s the first book you remember reading?
The Ladybird books, I can just about remember reading them at school, I was taught to read by The Initial Teaching Alphabet (I.T.A.) method apparently it was meant to be a practical simplified writing system which could be used to teach English-speaking children to read more easily than can be done with traditional orthography. After children had learned to read using ITA, they would then eventually take the transition to standard English spelling. Interestingly enough it was phased out in the 1970’s and it was later found that children who were taught this way aren’t the best speller’s something I have to agree with. I do get nostalgic when I see a vintage Ladybird cover though. The ITA version
2. What book will always stay with you and why?
The Diary Of Anne Frank it was the first book I read about the Holocaust, I remember being shocked at the terrible things that happened. Her story makes me smile, laugh, cry and become unbelievably angry at the inhumane treatment Anne, her family and other Holocaust victims were subjected to. Too much suffering for anyone so young to have endured. Yet the words of this remarkable young lady changed the world.
3 one book you are looking forward to reading?
Agh! That are so many where do I begin? One you say? Ok I’m going to have to go with Keeper by Johana Gustawsson. I loved Block 46, which was one of my top reads of 2017 and the book description for Keeper has made me really excited to read it.

Teaching kids to read through misspelled words seems like a really bad idea.
Glad your book blog took off, Lorraine!

I really like these book choices! And I feel exactly the same way about Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl. It’s a powerful read that stays with you…

I was taught ITA and couldn’t read until I was eight. Reading the dreadful ITA scheme books and being drilled daily in ITA flashcards put me off books for many years as a child. And I’m a terrible speller too!
