Now You See Me by S. J. Bolton
One night after interviewing a reluctant witness at a London apartment complex, Lacey Flint, a young detective constable, stumbles onto a woman brutally stabbed just moments before in the building’s darkened parking lot. Within twenty-four hours a reporter receives an anonymous letter that points out alarming similarities between the murder and Jack the Ripper’s first murder a letter that calls out Lacey by name. If it’s real, and they have a killer bent on re-creating London’s bloody past, history shows they have just five days until the next attempt.
No one believes the connections are anything more than a sadistic killer’s game, not even Lacey, whom the killer seems to be taunting specifically. However, as they investigate the details of the case start reminding her more and more of a part of her past she’d rather keep hidden. And the only way to do that is to catch the killer herself.
My Thoughts;
Young police officer Lacey Flint finds a woman brutally stabbed and dying and she’s doing in slumped over Lacey’s car.
This is the start of a chain of events that sees Lacey drawn into a dark and twisted world that looks to mimic the old London Jack the Ripper cases, and it’s a world where we, the reader can’t help but keep turning the page at an ever-increasing speed to see what happens next.
The novel is told from Lacey’s point of view and she is a brilliantly engaging protagonist that feels real rather than stereotypical. There are some breathtakingly exhilarating scenes and there are some quite graphic scenes, but it’s the kind of fast paced, dark crime novel that I like.
This book will keep you guessing all the way to the way to the end even as Lacey gives you information constantly. And now I’ve reached the end, I’m a massive Bolton fan and will be reading the next Lacey Flint novel very soon and if you haven’t had the pleasure of Bolton yet, I’d really recommend you try out this one. It’s a great start to a series I can’t wait to continue.

Unlike you, I never seem to start series with the right/first book, so I’ve read others in this series, but not this first one yet. Dark, sinister, compulsive, I agree. Glad you enjoyed it!

Doesn’t that frustrate you Marina? The little hints at what’s happened beforehand. I know good authors can make them read as standalones but there is still a history. I like to know where the story started specifically. I can’t wait to move through this one.

Rebecca – So glad you enjoyed this. And I agree completely that Bolton’s got talent. I need to spotlight one of her books…

It’s the first I’ve read and I loved it. The thought and characterisation are just brilliant!

If you thought this one was good, wait till you read Dead Scared! A brilliant book – it really did have me on the edge of my seat. The whole series is great.
Rebecca Bradley says
I’m looking forward to the rest of the series. I’d love to just lock myself away with it and not come out until I’d finished.

Unlike FictionFan I’ve not read Dead Scared, but Like This, For Ever was one of my fav books last year. Looks like we all agree that this is an excellent series!
Rebecca Bradley says
I can’t wait to read the others but for me I have to read them in order. It’s really frustrating!
suzigun says
Nothing wrong with that – but sometimes beggars can’t be choosers!

Sounds wonderful. You keep coming up with books I want to read!

And creating ever growing lists of my own Jacqui! That’s the problem with blogging as well, my TBR list grows from other peoples reads 🙂
