I have a collection of notebooks.
Multiple, ordinary A4 lined books where I scribble furiously. A wonderful hardback notebook with the words “I Could Have Been A Novel” printed on the front, and a couple of others I’ve picked up along the way.
My new favourite notebook however is a new one my little man bought himself from the Natural History Museum in London a couple of weeks ago. Yes, it’s not mine, but I wish I’d bought one as well. Just because.
An elephant poo notebook. Wonderful!
Do you have a favourite notebook?
Alex J. Cavanaugh says
I think all of mine are of the plain variety.
Rebecca Bradley says
I think the plainer ones are easier to write in!
Bel Anderson says
?!? That’s so funny! I have a gorgeous Kath Kidston one a friend bought me for my birthday last month but I can’t bring myself to write in it! Linda/Bel x
Rebecca Bradley says
It’s great isn’t it đ
That’s the problem with beautiful notebooks, I never want to spoil them with my scribblings!

I’ve got this ancient notebook i found at the back of my Dad’s desk years ago. It’s a carbon copy book or something. Old and ugly and falling apart. But its traveled the world with me, and has half a novel scribbled in it. It’s probably one of my most prized possessions.
Rebecca Bradley says
I think old and battered and well loved, used things like that, are often the best. There’s no concern about upsetting the aesthetics of it. I’d actually love a soft notebook like that.
Jane Isaac says
Great post, Rebecca! I love Poo notes. I have a plethora of notebooks scattered around my house. My favourite is a lime green one which I keep in my handbag. When I got my book deal on An Unfamiliar, my best friend bought me a Moleskine writers notebook but it’s remains empty as it seems far too nice to use!
Rebecca Bradley says
Poo notes are great aren’t they! đ
I’d love a moleskin. But like you, I probably wouldn’t write in it!
Margot Kinberg says
Oh, Rebecca, I love that notebook! So clever, witty and environmentally friendly. Thanks for sharing. As for me? My handwriting is far, far too illegible for me to get any use from a notebook…
Rebecca Bradley says
It’s great isn’t it! I loved it the moment I saw it. I still didn’t buy one for myself! Which was silly.
You do all your writing and notes on computer then Margot?
Margot Kinberg says
That’s right, Rebecca, I use either my computer, Kindle or sometimes ‘phone to take notes. And I always do the writing part on computer. It’s just easier that way…
Rebecca Bradley says
To be honest, I do a lot of short notes on my phone. Blog ideas and such like. Technology is very handy nowadays!

I love notebooks, I have several which are used for differents things. My favourite was one which was satin backed and the front was covered in multicoloured sequins. Another I loved was one my daughter bought me which had shiny butterflies all over it and a magnetic flip over thing to close it. They are both full now, but I kept them so i can still drool over how lovely they are!
Rebecca Bradley says
That’s the great thing with our current age, we can get all manner of beautiful notebooks. I need to be less afraid of writing in them though!
MarinaSofia says
My boys would just adore that notebook – how did we miss it at the Natural History Museum when we visited last in 2011?
Yes, I am a total notebook addict. I love all sizes, shapes and colours, the more colourful the better. But I currently use a free set that I got from Petit Bateau (for buying so much stuff from them, I have no doubt), which are very pretty, with nautical patterns all over them, and easy to fit into any handbag.
Rebecca Bradley says
They probably didn’t have them when you went last Marina. You can order them online from the museum shop though. I checked! đ
Julie Flanders says
I don’t, but now I want this one! How funny. đ
Have a great weekend, Rebecca. đ
Rebecca Bradley says
Thanks Julie. It’s wonderful isn’t it. Perfect for little boys as well!

I’m currently addicted to Semikolon’s 6 x 8.5″ notebooks. They’re the perfect size to do a respectable amount of work on one page but small enough to cart a few around at the same time but my favourite feature is the variety of colours. Yellow is for my year-long noveling project, the light blue for the San’s Sunday Shorts, cream is for workshops and other educational pursuits and red is for romance/erotica. Then there’s the brown one for my just-for-fun writing projects.
It sounds like a lot, and it is, but it keeps things so organized and clear. I don’t think I could ever use anything else.
Rebecca Bradley says
I think organisation is the key to getting anything done, and I’m only just getting my head around that fact. It sounds as though you have perfected it with those coloured notebooks. Perfect.

I have a lovely leather-bound, hand-made notebook that my kids gave me 2 years ago – I still haven’t written in it, it’s too special!
On a related note, my sis-in-law and her kids went to a workshop where they made kites out of poo paper – possibly not elephant, maybe sheep?
Rebecca Bradley says
That’s the problem with such beautiful notebooks, we daren’t spoil them by writing in them, yet that’s why they were created.
I love all this poo paper! đ
Kirsten says
My favorite notebook? Usually one that has lots of pages left to write in! But I have lots of them. đ One is small enough to fit into my purse, one is an unlined sketchpad with hard covers that I can take out on walks, one is designated for anything I think of for the trilogy I’m working on. It seems I have enough of them, but I can’t resist buying another one when I see it in the gift shop either.
Sounds like the little man might be an aspiring writer himself!
Rebecca Bradley says
Notebooks are just wonderful aren’t they. We can never have too many!
I’m not sure little man has written in it yet, I think he’s a bit like me, a special notebook and he’s scared of spoiling it!
wisejourney says
Always…one by my bedside, one in my bag and one floating around the house…always…always..always
Rebecca Bradley says
I’m like that, but sometimes I find things aren’t altogether. Because my thoughts can come at various times and go in different books it can be confusing! Got to love them though. đ

Now find myself tapping words into my iPhone !
Rebecca Bradley says
They are always useful aren’t they đ
diannegray says
I LOVE that notebook, Rebecca! LOL đ All my notebooks are old and tattered and I can never remember where they are. I need to get myself organised đ
Elle Turner says
Love your notebook, Rebecca! I have a favourite that I got at Covent Garden market – the only trouble is, I think it’s too pretty to use. đ xx
Vikki Thompson says
I LOVE that notebook, but, I have to say, I’m a HUGE Moleskine fan đ
Xx
Mieke Zamora-MackayM says
So funny. I have notebooks galore! I use a Moleskine regularly, but will be shifting soon to a recycled brand made in the USA. (Trying to be green and patriotic.) The period before school starts is always my favorite shopping season. I should post about this really.
David P says
I have many notebooks. Many. Many many. A big box full of many. My problem is with my handwriting. Beautiful bound notebooks from Rhodia, Leuchtturm and (occasionally) Moleskine, all with one or two pages used before I decided that any further imposition of my Horrible handwriting would spoil them even further. New Year task: arrange notebooks on shelf (rather than in the big IKEA Box) and start allotting them tasks. Then…..use them!
That Elephant Poo notebook is awesome……..
Rebecca Bradley says
The elephant poo notebook is great isn’t it. Though it sounds as though you have a pretty decent collection yourself.
Thanks for stopping by!
