It seems a little odd, to be blogging on a more regular basis, and not mention the national event that is currently taking over the entire country’s life, in one way or another. And that is the Olympics. Be that takeover be fully welcomed with opened arms, or completely fought against, I’m not sure you can really get away from it. Channels on the television are devoted to it. Everyone you talk to is excitedly raising their voices at the recent wins and future expectations and radio channels talk about past and coming events continually.
So, here I am, in my own corner of the blogosphere, acknowledging that, yes, it does seem that the Olympics have arrived. Well and truly and in some quite spectacular fashion I have to admit. For me, it started with “Good Evening Mr Bond” – From the Actual Queen herself! Who would have thought it. Brilliant! From that point on I was hook, lined and sunk.
Not only did the opening ceremony make me feel all proud to be British and oh, actually, this Olympic thing, might not be all that bad you know, the actual sport part that followed soon caught my attention and had me failing to get dressed in a morning and forgetting meals needed cooking and then blog posts needed organising. Everything has been completely going to pot. And to top it all off, I’ve had to go to work, so I’ve missed no end of great events, that could have kept me living my hermit life quite happily.
On a serious note. I am genuinely on the side of running in the opposite direction should a sport come across my television screen, which it regularly does in football season. At which point, I attempt to find a quiet room and read a book or write. But this has gone some way to changing my mind. I have a real and genuine interest, specifically in the rowing, cycling and swimming. I’ve loved them and have never shouted and cheered at a television so much. We are complete stars. – You get that by we, I actually mean, that by them putting their complete lives on hold to train, we became stars in these games right 😉
This is just how far drawn I am now into Olympic sport and wanting to watch the velodrome and rowing and swimming at a level where I get to cheer on Team GB in such an important event, that I have decided for our family, that in 2016, our holiday is now going to be in Rio where the next games are going to be held and we are going to attempt to get tickets for the opening ceremony, rowing, velodrome, swimming and little man wants to see someone called Bolt run. I’ve four years to put that plan in to action and that action, will simply involve saving my ass off.
The strange thing is, that since I announced on Twitter that I intend to go to Rio for the games, I have become all excited by the prospect and am now dancing round the house singing Rio in some odd advert tune completely unrelevant and getting ridiculously excited about something I can do nothing about yet. Because yes, I have checked if I can get tickets and I couldn’t find any place to get them. If you know otherwise, please don’t keep to yourself and share. I’m a bumbbling mess of Olympic excitement. Honestly.
These men and women make me proud to be British and are an inspiration.
Thank you Team GB from the bottom of my heart. You are amazing!

Rebecca – Congratulations and well-done to Team GB from me, too. I have to admit to a similar surge watching the US women’s beach volleyballers and gymnasts, the US swimmers and some of the other US athletes. And like you, I’m not really into sport – at all. For me it wasn’t even so much the countries from which the athletes come. It was knowing how incredibly hard each of them worked. That and their obvious determination and passion for their sport. It’s infectious.

Margot, I have to apologise, I wrote this post in my excitement and forgot that I may actually have blog readers that aren’t British!
I was a little in love with your US swimmer though, what was his name Lochte? Rather good at swimming and not bad to look at either! 😉

Great post, Rebecca. We’re really enjoying the Olympics here too and will miss it when its gone. We like the cycling, tennis & swimming best, although watch practically everything. So proud of all our athletes. Rio’ll be amazing;)

It has left a bit of a hole here, now it’s gone. It’s seems odd that for a couple of weeks, the whole country, and the world, were obsessing about sports. A great event.

It has been an amazing fortnight. The opening ceremony completely swept me away, I hadn’t expected anything so awesome, and Team GB have really stepped up. I was even watching the boxing last night, but I drew the line at the equestrian stuff – just not me. Just watching the diving and cheering my home town lad Tom Daley!
Rebecca Bradley says
I loved the dancing horses! I didn’t watch the boxing though 🙂
Tom was great and he’s only young, he has a great career ahead of him. My teenager was quite smitten with him.

I have been utterly and completely sucked into the Olympics. It’s SO nice to see all the positivity and to embrace the athletes’ performances! I’ll feel bereft when it’s all over.

It has left quite a hole now it’s finished. It did a great job of making the country feel united though. I hope the paralympics does the same thing.

I am amazed at how much I have enjoyed watching the olympics. I shall feel very sad at the end of the closing ceremonies tonight.

It does feel strange that it has finished. I can’t believe I was so obsessed with sports. I’m looking forward to the paralympics now.
