As you know, I’m no longer doing book reviews on the blog and because of this my reading habits have changed and I’m enjoying reading so much more because I don’t feel that I have to pick up certain books. I am selecting books dependant on my mood at the time.
I have also found my reading choices are widening.
Recently I have read two books that I wouldn’t normally have read while I was reviewing and I loved both of them. And I now want more of this type to read. These are Thrillers with a sci-fi twist to them.
The books are;
Lock In by John Scalzi
Not too long from today, a new, highly contagious virus makes its way across the globe. Most who get sick experience nothing worse than flu, fever and headaches. But for the unlucky one percent – and nearly five million souls in the United States alone – the disease causes “Lock In”: Victims fully awake and aware, but unable to move or respond to stimulus. The disease affects young, old, rich, poor, people of every color and creed. The world changes to meet the challenge.
A quarter of a century later, in a world shaped by what’s now known as “Haden’s syndrome,” rookie FBI agent Chris Shane is paired with veteran agent Leslie Vann. The two of them are assigned what appears to be a Haden-related murder at the Watergate Hotel, with a suspect who is an “integrator” – someone who can let the locked in borrow their bodies for a time. If the Integrator was carrying a Haden client, then naming the suspect for the murder becomes that much more complicated.
But “complicated” doesn’t begin to describe it. As Shane and Vann began to unravel the threads of the murder, it becomes clear that the real mystery – and the real crime – is bigger than anyone could have imagined. The world of the locked in is changing, and with the change comes opportunities that the ambitious will seize at any cost. The investigation that began as a murder case takes Shane and Vann from the halls of corporate power to the virtual spaces of the locked in, and to the very heart of an emerging, surprising new human culture. It’s nothing you could have expected.

Brilliance by Marcus Sakey
In Wyoming, a little girl reads people’s darkest secrets by the way they fold their arms. In New York, a man sensing patterns in the stock market racks up $300 billion. In Chicago, a woman can go invisible by being where no one is looking. They’re called “brilliants,” and since 1980, one percent of people have been born this way. Nick Cooper is among them; a federal agent, Cooper has gifts rendering him exceptional at hunting terrorists. His latest target may be the most dangerous man alive, a brilliant drenched in blood and intent on provoking civil war. But to catch him, Cooper will have to violate everything he believes in – and betray his own kind.

As you can see, these are both near-future or current day reads so they read like an everyday thriller but with the added twist to it. I absolutely loved the sci-fi twist and would recommend these books to anyone who fancies something different to their normal crime read.
If you know of any similar kinds of reads you can recommend, I’d love to hear from you.
What books have taken you out of a reading funk recently?
Funnily enough, I was meeting with a local writing group on Sunday and there were two writers there who were writing this kind of near-future sci-fi, with an emphasis on human relationships rather than technology. So perhaps in future I will have some books to recommend by them!
That’d be great, do let me know if you do!
I’ve heard good things about Scalzi’s book. Glad to know you can enjoy some science fiction now and then.
Yes! I know it’s your world Alex and I’m slowly inching into it 🙂
It’s interesting, Rebecca, how trying something different can get you out of a reading funk. And sometimes, a touch of sci-fi in a story can add that interesting twist. I’m not well versed in the genre, so can’t offer a sensible recommendation. But I’m glad you’re finding some great new books.
I’m really loving reading at the moment, Margot. In fact, I can’t believe how many books I’ve managed to read this first month of the year!
Glad you’re enjoying something a little different at the moment! I would recommend Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel – one of my favourite novels of 2016 – and Dark Matter by Blake Crouch, which I’ve only recently finished. Sleeping Giants has more of a sci-fi focus than Dark Matter, but both are thrillers with a bit of a twist.
Ooh, I’ll look Sleeping Giants up, thank you. Dark Matter has been recommended and is on my TBR list. But, I will definitely look up Sleeping Giants. Thank you!
Not a book, but I heard that Neil Cross, who created Luther, has a new TV series in production with a near-apocalypse theme. Don’t shoot me, but I didn’t like Luther – too much shouting and turning over of tables for me – I simply couldn’t suspend disbelief to that extent. But this one does intrigue me. Link to info about the series here: http://www.neil-cross.com/
That sounds interesting, Hard Sun, I’ll keep an eye out for it, thank you!
