Last night the crime book club met up once again on Google+ Hangouts onair and discussed The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley.
You can watch the meeting below. Feel free to join the fun one month and if you find it difficult to keep up via the blog, sign up to the book club newsletter Here.
The club loved this book. The feel and voice of the 11 year old female narrator, Flavia felt natural and her intelligence was wonderful but realistic set against her siblings and family relationships.
Discussions were held about cosy crime and also the age group this is aimed at. We felt that in relation to age groups, because it was a child narrator, it was a book that could be read by anyone of any age.

The book we are reading in May is The Dinner by Herman Koch.
A summer’s evening in Amsterdam and two couples meet at a fashionable restaurant. Between mouthfuls of food and over the delicate scraping of cutlery, the conversation remains a gentle hum of politeness – the banality of work, the triviality of holidays. But the empty words hide a terrible conflict and, with every forced smile and every new course, the knives are being sharpened… Each couple has a fifteen-year-old son. Together, the boys have committed a horrifying act, caught on camera, and their grainy images have been beamed into living rooms across the nation; despite a police manhunt, the boys remain unidentified – by everyone except their parents. As the dinner reaches its culinary climax, the conversation finally touches on their children and, as civility and friendship disintegrate, each couple shows just how far they are prepared to go to protect those they love.
I hope we see you next month. It was a fun meeting this month. If you’re a crime fiction fan give it a twirl!

Have to learn to hold my tongue – I talked way too much! Always obvious when you hear it back again. Thanks for a great evening, and for your perseverence with the technology. Won’t be able to join you next month, nor June I don’t think, as I’ll be travelling, but hopefully back in July.

Rebecca – Thanks for a great meeting! We had a terrific time. And Marina, I don’t think you talked too much at all. Looking forward to next month’s meeting.

I love the idea of doing a book club in a Google hangout. I feel like I have too much going on to participate in a structured book club at the moment, but in the past I loved the idea of writing book reviews, and then having people comment on these sharing their thoughts about the book as well. To me book reviews written online are also like a book club anyone can join in on at any time.

Thanks for sharing your book for May! I’m afraid my computer wouldn’t be able to keep up with a video conference, but I appreciate reading your thoughts on the books you read. 🙂
