Last night saw the third meeting for the online crime book club. I was thrilled with the turn out as I’d changed the date at short notice due to work commitments. So thank you to members who still logged in!
We discussed White Heat by MJ McGrath.
The consensus of the group was that it was a great read. The frozen setting and the Inuit life giving a unique and fresh – if rather chilly – look at crime fiction. The protagonist, Edie, was well liked and all characters fleshed out and believable. All members said they would definitely read the next in the series.Β

I did make an error last night. It was caused by my muddled brain due to this course that work have me on. I said I hadn’t sorted voting choices for November’s read so we discussed options and a decision was made that we would make November Australia themed. The error is that I did put voting choices up very early in October, but because we didn’t have a massive vote on them and all members were happy with the options last night, we will stick with the Australia options and I will slide the other books in somewhere in the coming months.
Three books were nominated and you can vote on those in the comments section. Because of the short notice, I am going to close the vote on Thursday evening at 8 p.m. GMT, so if you want a say, get voting!
The books to vote on are;
Diamond Dove also known as Moonlight Downs by Adrian Hyland
Emily Tempest has been away from the outback for a long time – uni, travel, dead-end jobs… finding trouble all over the world. Now she’s back at Moonlight Downs, the community where she grew up, half in the Aboriginal world, half in the white. And true to form, there’s trouble. Within hours of her arrival an old friend is brutally murdered and mutilated and an old enemy is the only suspect… until Emily starts asking questions.Take a nail-biting mystery, an epic setting and a heroine with a talent for stirring things up. Throw in an affectionate flogging of outback Australia’s melanoma-encrusted hide.
The Cry by Helen Fitzgerald
He’s gone. And telling the truth won’t bring him back…
When a baby goes missing on a lonely roadside in Australia, it sets off a police investigation that will become a media sensation and dinner-table talk across the world.
Lies, rumours and guilt snowball, causing the parents, Joanna and Alistair, to slowly turn against each other.
Finally Joanna starts thinking the unthinkable: could the truth be even more terrible than she suspected? And what will it take to make things right?
The CryΒ is a dark psychological thriller with a gripping moral dilemma at its heart and characters who will keep you guessing on every page.
The Dying Beach by Angela Savage
A new case for expat private investigator Jayne Keeney.
As Jayne and Rajiv holiday in Krabi, Jayne can’t stop her mind straying to thoughts of the future: a successful business, perhaps even a honeymoon. Who would have thought she could be so content?
But then their tour guide’s body is found floating in the shallows and no one can explain the marks around her neck. Jayne and Rajiv are pulled into a case that the police have already decided isn’t one: a case that will pull at the seams of their fledgling relationships and lead Jayne into grave danger.
I’m really looking forward to reading November’s choice. What will you choose though? Leave your choice in the comments box.
Rebecca – Thanks as always for such a great book club meeting. These are all great nominations for next month’s read, too. I know I originally nominated Diamond Dove but honestly, I’ll be happy with any one of these.
I’m glad you enjoyed the meeting Margot. I am really loving how technology allows us to meet and talk together this way!
I also love the sound of all three books! π
I’d like to read all three but am going to go with the one that sounds as if it may have a slight edge of humour to it – Diamond Dove. I did see a November post up on here yesterday Rebecca and wondered if that was the voting post that I had somehow missed but when I clicked onto it I saw White Heat on it so I presumed you had put November in the post header instead of October. I am pleased that it was somehow missed though because I quite like the way we have a theme for November! Can we have a Christmas theme for December? π *hides*
This book club is going to do my TBR pile no good Denyse, because every month I want to read all three! π
And yes, I’ll look for Christmas themed books for December π
