The Recently Read posts are not typical book reviews. As a writer, I do not believe I should be reviewing the hard work of other writers. These posts are simply books I have recently read and enjoyed and will share with you. They will not always be crime books as I am trying to widen my reading selection. I hope you enjoy some of these with me.
The Body Snatchers by Jack Finney
On a quiet fall evening in the small, peaceful town of Mill Valley, California, Dr. Miles Bennell discovered an insidious, horrifying plot. Silently, subtly, almost imperceptibly, alien life-forms were taking over the bodies and minds of his neighbors, his friends, his family, the woman he loved — the world as he knew it.
First published in 1955, this classic thriller of the ultimate alien invasion and the triumph of the human spirit over an invisible enemy inspired three major motion pictures
My thoughts;
I read this book as it was my book club read. Broadway Book club in Nottingham. I wasn’t really sure what to expect as I haven’t read much in the way of science fiction.
I was quite amazed to find how much I loved it and read it in two sitting. I read the majority in the second sitting as I just couldn’t put it down.
The way it’s written strongly reminded me of the old Sci-Fi films I used to watch as a child, but that was a part of it’s charm. What I didn’t expect was the brilliant basis in science. The psychological aspects. I presumed it was going to be a straightforward, aliens invade, that’s what we’re dealing with. But psychologically, there is a lot involved. A lot of food for thought.
It was a little twee in places, but that has just endeared it to me.
I borrowed this from the library but I’m so taken with it, I think I’m actually going to go and buy my own copy because I can really imagine reading this again.
Loved it!
Rebecca – I’m not usually one for sci-fi plots like this one, but it sounds as though there’s quite a lot of suspense and several very human stories too. I just may give it a go.
It’s a classic, Rebecca, so if you were going to pick one of those horror type books, this is a good one. It’ll make for good conversation at your next PTA meeting.
