Last night we held the second Google+ Hangout crime book club meeting. I was, yet again, incredibly anxious about it. Until it becomes a little more established, I think nerves will be a regular precursor to the book club. I was terrified that no-one was going to turn up, that I was going to be sat in the hangout all alone, but I wasn’t. I was joined by three members, Denyse Kirkby who is now a regular and two new members, one of whom you may recognise as a regular visitor to the blog – Margot Kinberg! And it was lovely to meet her.
What I really loved about this week, that was evidenced, is the fantastic ability of Google+ Hangouts to bring ALL crime book lovers together, in that I started the Hangout in the UK and we were joined from the US and even from 5.30 a.m. in Australia by Melanie McKissock. Impressive stuff.
Again, we live streamed the Hangout on YouTube. You can watch this live by subscribing to my YouTube channel and watching it on the night or watching out for the link being put out on Twitter using the hashtag #crimebookclub.
The general consensus of the group on The Silent Wife was that it was a brilliantly written book with beautiful descriptions of life and relationships but a bit slow for our crime readers who prefer something a little more fast paced.
We had a couple of apologies this month so I’m expecting a busier meeting next month. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 16th October at 8 p.m. GMT. It would be great to see you!
The winning vote for October’s meeting is White Heat by M. J. McGrath.
Half Inuit, half outsider, Edie Kiglatuk is the best guide in her corner of the Arctic, but as a woman she gets only grudging respect from the elders of her isolated community on Ellesmere Island. When a man is shot and killed while on an ”authentic” Arctic adventure under her watch, the murder attracts police sergeant Derek Palliser’s attention. As Edie sets out to discover what those tourists were really after, she’s shocked by the suicide of someone close to her. The events seem unrelated, but Edie’s Inuit hunter sensibility tells her otherwise. With or without Derek’s help, she’s determined to find the connection–a search that takes her beyond her village and into the far reaches of the tundra.”White Heat” is a stunning debut novel set in an utterly foreign culture amid an unforgiving landscape of ice and rock, of spirit ancestors and never-rotting bones. ‘White Heat’ is a stunning debut novel, a suspense-filled adventure story that will captivate fans of Henning Mankell.
