As you know I have recently started a bit of a love affair with YouTube. It’s not a daily thing, but it is something I have found I can resource all sorts of snippets of interesting information from. This one is a short video if crime writers telling us how important they think research is. And as one of the questions on our First Draft series on Fridays, is “How important is research to you?” I thought we could look at these varied answers.
What do you think?
Good video. Hmmm. I’ve never read Harlen Coben but I guess I’m gonna have to now to see how it pulls that off. Thanks for sharing 🙂
I read one of Harlen Cobens books after hearing him talk at Harrogate last year. He came across so genuinely that I just had to read one of his books and I really enjoyed it.
Great to have you doing the video researches for us, Rebecca. I always enjoy your finds!
Thanks Marina. I’m enjoying it now I’ve found the joy that is YouTube! 🙂
Rebecca – This is so interesting! And it’s an important question too. I think doing research is essential if you’re going to give a story authentic feel. It’s good to get these experts’ views.
It’s also interesting to hear the contrasting views on research. A bit like the first draft questions, we all do, do things differently!
Me too–I’m becoming a convert to video. Research is one of my favorite parts of writing–so this was interesting.
Yes, excellent. Thanks for sharing that Rebecca. The Bat by Jo Nesbo was just like Harlan described. It was really annoying. For me, I want an air of authenticity, and I like factoids. In Ashmore Grief I included some really interesting stuff about Australian politics but it is germaine to the story. However too much of it can spoil the story. I don’t want to feel like the author is trying to impress me with how much research they have done, (or their team of researchers has done) but I do like to learn new things. It comes down to balance.
